Abstract
An experiment was conducted for 300 days of lactation to study the effect of feeding deoiled sal seed meal (DSSM) at 0, 10 and 20% levels in concentrate mixtures on milk yield, fat-corrected milk (FCM) yield and milk composition of Kankrej cows. The results revealed a significant reduction in both milk and FCM yields in the treatment receiving 20% DSSM, indicating that incorporation of DSSM at this level adversely affected milk production compared with the control treatment. The treatment containing 10% DSSM showed the best performance among the three treatments. Thus, DSSM should not be included at more than 10% in the concentrate mixture of lactating animals. Milk composition was slightly lower for some constituents in the group receiving 10% DSSM; however, the differences among the three treatments for all analysed milk constituents were statistically non-significant.
