Response of Durum Wheat (Triticum durum Desf.) to Sowing Dates and N-Levels in Vertisol of Central India

Abstract

A field experiment was conducted during the winter seasons (Rabi) 1994–95 and 1995–96 in Vertisol at Powarkheda (M.P.) to find out optimum sowing time and N-level for the durum type wheat. The results that durum wheat (cv. HI 8381) sown on 17 November provided the highest mean grain yield (2912 kg/ha), straw yield (3894 kg/ha) and economic benefits (Rs. 6753/ha net return and 2.16 B ratio) over early (2 November) and delayed sowing (2 December). Among the N-levels (0, 30, 60, 90 and 120 kg/ha), maximum mean values for grain yield (3890 kg/ha), straw yield (4792 kg/ha), net return (Rs. 9762/ha) and B ratio (2.67) were found with 120 kg N/ha. The interaction effects of sowing dates and N-levels on grain and straw yield were not significant.
