Identification of prevalent races of black or stem rust of Wheat in North Gujarat

Abstract

Emergence of new highly virulent races of wheat rust due to mutation inside pathogen has rendered many resistant varieties of wheat into susceptible one with passing of time. Earlier report for the breakdown of stripe rust resistance against Yr9, virulence of Sr24, Sr25 and Sr31 tor black or stem rust has posed a serious challenge while combating rust pathogens. The pattern of dynamism of black or stem rust races during the last six years (2011-12 to 2016-17) has revealed that two races i.e. 11 and 40A were predominantly well established in climatic conditions of North Gujarat while another two races i.e. 40-1 and 40-3 were detected only during 2013-14.
