Abstract
An experiment was conducted to study the effect of sheltering during summer on serum PBI content in order to assess the thyroid activity in Kankrej and Kankrej × Jersey (F₁) cattle. Serum PBI content in the sheltered group was higher by 14.56 and 11.24 per cent than that of the exposed group in Kankrej and Kankrej × Jersey (F₁), respectively. The difference in PBI content for the two groups was highly significant (P<0.01) in Kankrej and significant (P<0.05) in Kankrej × Jersey (F₁). Week-to-week variation in PBI content was highly significant (P<0.01) in both the breeds for sheltered as well as exposed groups. Findings revealed that under summer stress, thyroid activity is significantly suppressed in indigenous as well as crossbred animals, and sheltering definitely helps in maintaining higher thyroid activity.
