Chloroquine Phosphate in Treatment of Theileriasis in Exotic and Crossbred Cattle; A Clinico-pharmacological Approach

Abstract

One hundred and nine clinical cases of theileriasis were treated and observed, with a total of 178 treatments administered. The clinical diagnostic features of the disease are discussed, and six different treatment regimens were evaluated. Chloroquine phosphate, administered at doses of 1,200, 2,400 or 2,800 mg b.e. intramuscularly, along with 3 g of quinine dihydrochloride administered intravenously or intramuscularly once daily, where required, for four days, produced encouraging results. Coupled immunopharmacological therapy was also attempted, although further observations are required to establish its efficacy. With these treatment regimens, the mortality rate was 2%.
